Account Intrusion Investigation — Email Addresses Found
In the course of an account intrusion investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified personally identifiable information (PII) for thousands of online account users, to include email addresses. This PII was in the possession of the subject of the investigation.
There are multiple potential ways in which this PII could have been taken. The FBI cannot attribute the exact source of all information found in the subject's possession. However, we are aware that one source was the unauthorized access by the subject of a third-party database. The investigation has identified more than 150,000 individuals whose PII was obtained from this third-party database.
